Branford Grove School's independent study program uses the home as the base and the world and the community as the classroom. Taking charge of your children's education is a challenging endeavor which we believe will reap many rewards. We, at Branford Grove School, hope to support each school family by helping with record keeping. We also hope to assist you by filtering through the myriad of information that is available to homeschooling families today, then passing those gems on to you. We will also assist you with the following: obtaining and maintaining the cum files, communicating with school officials as needed, directing you to curriculum resources and homeschooling support groups, and offering, encouragement as well as knowledge that we have gained through years of facilitating our own children's education. In keeping with Branford Grove's School philosophy, we'd like to encourage you to take a holistic approach to learning. Invite your children to not just study subjects, but pursue passions and explore interests. Recognize that learning occurs in everything that your child does or experiences. Learning happens when cooking, helping to clean the house, planting a garden, harvesting and putting up food, caring for animals, singing, storytelling, helping with the family finances, navigating the Internet, playing video games, corresponding with friends, the list is endless. Living is a wonderful education! Indeed, perhaps this type of learning is the most enduring because it is relative to the student's life. We hope to empower each parent and through you enable the student. You can teach your own child, and your child will learn. Most often the children teach themselves. They are the learners. The parent's role then becomes that of a guide or a facilitator. Ours is a "do-it-yourself" program. The choices are yours! You set your goals and choose the courses needed to meet those goals. You choose the curriculum. You're free to buy a packaged curriculum or put together a more flexible one by using library books, the Internet, manipulatives, various texts, and other materials. Many students incorporate community and college classes into their program as well. You chart each student's progress and then report it to us. We provide forms and guidance to help in this endeavor, but if you find a better way of keeping track of your child's learning, by all means feel free to use it, then share it with us. We're here to help you get the education that your child needs and wants. Please email or call us with questions or if you need more information.
