Information on High School

To earn a diploma, students may meet the requirements by choosing between a Course of Study or one of the Alternative options available.



Course of Study Graduation Requirements*
High School students will work toward Credits, usually 10 credits per one academic year, or two semesters, of study. Total credits required for graduation is 220.

English 30 Credits required

Mathematics 20 Credits required

Social Studies:

United States History 10 Credits

World History 10 Credits

American Government/Civics 5 Credits

Economics 5 Credits

Science 20 Credits

Fine Arts or Foreign Language 10 Credits

Physical Education 20 Credits

Electives** 90 Credits

**Elective courses may include additional English, math, arts, foreign language or science courses required by the college of your choice, or it may include typing, computer skills, sewing, cooking, music, woodworking, work experience, and others.

Please Note: College bound students will want to check with their chosen college or university for it's requirements. Many colleges require 40 Credits of English, Algebra and Geometry for the math credits, Biology and Chemistry for science, 20 Credits of a foreign language and so on. For illustrative purposes, admissions information from the University of California system is included on pages 9 - 11. The college or university that you plan to attend, may have different requirements.

Alternative Graduation Requirements *
The governing board, with the active involvement of parents, administrators, teachers, and pupils, have adopted the following alternative means for pupils to complete the prescribed course of study. The alternative options are as follows:

Student passes a state proficiency exam, GED or Standardized Achievement Test.

A portfolio which may include practical demonstration of skills and competencies, supervised work experience or other outside school experience, vocational education classes or courses offered by regional occupational centers or programs, photos and description of projects undertaken and completed.

24 credits earned at a postsecondary institution. Grade point average should be 2.5 or above and the coursework should include at least one of each of the following courses: English, math, and science.
